What Are Your Thoughts on U.S. Operations in Afghanistan/Iraq?

That's a two fold question. In Afghanistan there is a semblance of a chance that the U.S. intervention will hold some long term good for the county in a post-Taliban era.

As for Iraq, I just feel it's not worth the lives and limbs of our soldiers. Before we invaded I was having a discussion with a friend who was very gung-ho about the US going in and taking down Saddam. I told him then; removing Saddam is not the problem, that will take less than a month. The problem is that no one has areal plan for AFTER he is gone and it will become a quagmire of a 'police action' similar to Vietnam.

Unfortunately I was more corect than not.

Having served in both Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom I think I a valid view. While conducting MP operations in Afghanistan I initially felt as if I were wasting my time. I was then given a mission to train a platoon of Afghan Garrison Police. Later during my deployment I saw the same soldiers I trained performing real life missions. I felt I had accomplished something. ( Not to mention we were attacked by afghanistan.) Now onto Iraq, we were lied to. We went into the country looking for weapons of mass destruction we knew weren't there and hoping to solidify our hold on their oil. We have soldiers dying needlessly trying to win the hearts and minds of people with a concept that is as alien to them as Islam is to most Americans. To be completely honest I feel we need to pack our gear and head home. Let the politicians handle Iraq. One last thing. If we stay our course, we will be stretched to thin to protect ourselves from an impending preemptive strike from a certain Islamic country.
